Just a note for us in Saluda:
Yesterday, our dog got into a fight with a racoon while my friend and I were working in the garden, not even 100 ft away (and pretty oblivious, until the noise started up.) From my partial glimpse, the coon looked somewhere around to her size, which is about ~20 pounds. Brownie ended up with a puncture wound on her leg, and ended up at the vet, where they gave her a booster rabies shot. The scare was that it all happened at high noon, and in the creek, and apparently rabid animals follow water. The coon is gone (where?). Brownie should be fine, and has already quit limping as of this morning, although that may be some of the medicine's magic.
Just wanted to let everyone know so they could keep an eye out...

The corn is running low, although we still have a few picked-over ears left. let me know if anyone is interested in a few. The salad mixes are producing well, and I'm just starting to harvest my new summer squash crop this week. It looks like there may be a week or two lag between the wax bean crops, as my first set is winding down, and the second isn't quite making beans yet (signs of developing flower buds though). I still have a wide selection of tomaotes available, from cherry, to big beef, heirlooms and such. And blueberries are still producing as well.
I'm starting to harvest the earliest of the winter squashes. I will have a boatload, especially of butternut. I'll try to work up some recipes, too, as we'll need plenty of ideas to get all these eaten. (Remember that quarter mile of winter squash I told ya'll my neighbor and I planted this spring? That's the squash I'm talking about.) I'll be bringing a few to the market this Thursday.
This week, my major goal is to keep cleaning up the garden in the spots that need it, and mainly to get some more crops in, like peas, more salad mix, carrots, and all sorts of other things.

We've recently had the opportunity to start selling some of our produce at the Mana Cabana in downtown Saluda (behind the Wright Outfitters on Main Street.) They are open Wed-Sat 11-6. While they just opened a couple months ago, they have a wonderful selection of local, organic vegetables. Stop by and tell Carol Lynn that Mollie sent you. :)
